Campaigns and Communications officer Barry Murphy has announced that he will be contesting the upcoming UCD Students Union Presidential bye-election on November 22nd and 23rd.

Mr Murphy who was elected in March to the position of Campaigns and Communications officer said in a statement on social media tonight that “The SU needs stability during this time to rebuild our reputation and to get back to providing the services, events and representation that we are elected to do.” Continuing from this he said he wished to launch a full governance review and a new staff team to ensure that the SU delivered for all students.

Mr Murphy along with Graduate Office Niall Torris and Education Officer Robert Sweeney all campaigned in favor of impeaching former UCD SU President Katie Ascough during last months Impeachment Referendum. Seeking to address this Mr Murphy said ” I never wanted an impeachment at the the beginning, voicing my support to the Yes vote was an incredibly difficult decision to make. I stood up for what I felt was right and I stand by that decision.”

Mr Murphy has been acting as the President of the Students Union since he was deputised by Ms Ascough on October 3rd so she could campaign against her impeachment. He will now need to gather the required 150 signatures to be placed on the ballot.
