Organising a class trip, a romantic vacation for your significant other or just a good weekend away with a few friends? Just a short plane trip away and easy on the pocket, Edinburgh is the perfect location for a city break.
If travelling for a weekend at the beginning of January dorms for groups start at just €15 per person, per night. Hotels are a bit more expensive, as expected, starting at €130 for two people for a two night stay. These hotels, like the hostels, are right next to or on the royal mile which is the heart of Edinburgh meaning you won’t have to venture far away from your hotel when looking for things to do.
While in Edinburgh you will never be stuck for things to do. One of the best things I did while in Edinburgh, and something I would highly recommend, would be a visit to the famous Edinburgh Castle. Yes it is a tad on the expensive side with tickets priced at £16 but I would say it is well worth it. With the different museums dotted around and the incredible views of the whole city from high up on the castle walls, you could easily spend an entire day exploring everything the castle has to offer.
If unlike me you are not a museum buff, a place you should definitely visit are the Edinburgh dungeons. Tickets are priced at £16.50 or £10.95 if you book online; it’s a reasonably priced adventure and something you will surely remember from your trip. Lasting for just under an hour and a half, the tour will both terrify you and make you scream with laughter, a definite must when visiting the city.
If you want to explore the city by foot and see everything it has to offer, I would highly recommend a walking tour. Sandemans New Europe group brings you on a 2 and a half hour walking tour of the city, taking in the castle and the royal mile. It also brings you to some places off the beaten track such as the sites of witch burnings and the original Hogwarts.
Finally, going out in Edinburgh is a must do. Electric Circus is one of the best clubs to visit during your stay. Situated right in the heart of the city on Market Street, it’s a club that’s always busy and guarantees you a good time. The Liquid Room is also another option, with a capacity of 800 and the club favouring a Hip Hop vibe, you’re sure for a good night here.
So if you are planning a mini break before you get back into the stress and strains of the college year I would definitely suggest you give Edinburgh a look. The only downside you may have with your trip is that you won’t have enough time to fit everything in!
