University College Dublin (UCD) moved to third on the Airtricity League of Ireland first division table, after a comprehensive 0-6 victory over Cobh Ramblers. Colm Whelan and Yoyo Mahdy eached scored a brace to beat a ten-man home side on Saturday.
The first goal of the game, and only goal of the first half, came in the 25th minute. Charlie Lyons of the Ramblers found the back of his own side’s net to put the Students in the lead.
The remainder of the half saw poor discipline from both sides, with several yellow cards being dished out. The Ramblers would be dealt another blow, though, as John Kavanagh went into the referee’s book for the second time and was subsequently red carded just eight minutes before halftime.
It took Mahdy 56 minutes to find the back of the net for his first goal, before Liam Kerrigan made it 0-3 ten minutes later. The flood gates would open then for the visitors, as Whelan scored his first of the night halfway through the second half, which was followed up by Mahdy for his second.
Both teams emptied their benches, which seemed to stem the onslaught from the Students, however Whelan completed his brace with a goal in the 89th minute to earn the victory for the visitors.
UCD will now host Drogheda United on Friday. Drogheda sit just one place above UCD on the table, just one point ahead.
