The College Tribune is excited to announce that a new Editor-in-Chief has been chosen to manage the 38th Volume of Ireland’s largest independent student newspaper. Jack Donlon (pictured below) was selected by an adjudication panel of former editors of The College Tribune, and will now take over the running of Ireland’s largest independent student newspaper.
Jack Donlon:
Jack Donlon has spent the last year as Turbine Editor and a member of the Editorial Team at the College Tribune. He has just completed a Bachelor’s in History and Linguistics at UCD and will graduate in September.
Jack started writing for the Tribune in 2021, originally as an Arts & Lifestyle writer. Jack was quickly promoted to Music Correspondent for The College Tribune. During this time he began writing for The Turbine, The College Tribune’s satire section. Excelling at this style of writing, Jack was promoted to Turbine Editor and has held this position ever since.
In reaction to his appointment, Jack said “I was delighted to be offered the position of editor, and seeing how others before me have empowered people to engage with journalism and unlock their potential is something that really inspired me. I had never even thought of journalism until around two years ago when I first reached out to the Tribune about writing an article, and everyone who was involved there allowed me to develop my skills and be in the position I am today. If I can do it, anyone can.”
The incoming Editor-in-Chief outlined his vision for the publication in the coming year; “The Tribune is about creativity, independence and a collective that strives to make the best paper that we can possibly make. Nobody is here for money (although donations are welcome!), ego or to further their own agenda. They gave me a chance to write, the guidance to improve, and a community to be a part of. It means a lot to me that I can be a part of continuing to make the Tribune happen.”
Jack thanked the outgoing Editors for Volume 37, Hugh Dooley and Emma Hanrahan saying:
“I have big boots to fill, Hugh and Emma have done a fantastic job over the past year developing all aspects of the paper. If I can keep that momentum going I’ll be on the right path. I have too many ideas to count in terms of what I’d like to do, but one of my key aims is to continue to develop our community of writers and welcome anyone who has an idea for an article, from satire to breaking news”
The Outgoing Team:
“I am delighted that Jack has been appointed as the next Editor of the College Tribune,” said outgoing Co-Editor, Emma Hanrahan. “While it is bittersweet to leave the Trib behind, I am confident leaving it in his hands. Jack is a talented writer with innovative ideas and I know that the paper will continue to thrive under his leadership.”
Outgoing Co-Editor Hugh Dooley said, “After working with Jack over the last three years, I am thrilled to be passing the keys to our no-longer dingy office on to such a talented and hard-working journalist. It is sad to leave The College Tribune after so many years but I am confident that the paper will not just continue its legacy of unbiased and impactful journalism with Jack as Editor, but also be far funnier!”
