It was announced today that Dublin Bus and Bus Éireann drivers are to hold two 48 hour strikes during the month of May.
These strikes will take place on Friday 1st and Saturday 2nd May, with the second 48 hour strike occurring on Friday 15th and Saturday 16th May.
The second of these strikes falls on the last two days of UCD exams.
The drivers are taking this action as part of their campaign to oppose the potential privatisation of bus routes.
The drivers, who are represented by SIPTU, are campaigning against the plans by the National Transport Authority which could result in 10% of routes currently operated by Dublin Bus being taken over by private companies.
SIPTU believes that this move would damage public transport and was unnecessary.
The announcement follows a refusal by the management of both Dublin Bus and Bus Éireann to meet with workers to discuss their major concerns over plans to privatise certain bus routes.
