The first votes have been cast in the elections for sabbatical officers, college officers and the USI re-affiliation referendum. Voting takes place today in the Veterinary building from 10am to 4.15pm, Richview and Newstead buildings from 10am – 4pm, and Sutherland building and Carysfort campus from 10am to 5pm.
With only one sabbatical officer position, campaigns and communications, contested turnout is not expected to be high. However, the running of the USI referendum, which was the subject of heated debate in the Fitzgerald chamber last night, may boost turnout figures somewhat.
The positions open for election today are that of Students’ Union President, Welfare Officer, Campaigns and Communications Officer, Education Officer, Graduate Officer, Irish Language Officer, Agriculture & Veterinary Officer, Business & Law Officer, and Engineering & Architecture Officer.
Each of these positions is uncontested bar Ag & Vet which sees Vikki Banach standing against Joseph Milleric and Eng & Arch in which Joshua Gorman is running against Lida O’Shea.
Today is will be quiet as voting is limited to a small number of faculties dotted around campus, tomorrow will bring out the campaigners in force and see tides turned and positions won and lost.
The campaigns and communications contest sees three candidates, Sam Blanckensee, Ryan Oakes and Luke Fitzpatrick go head to head in the race for the recently reinstated role. You can check out the College Tribune‘s interviews with these candidates here.
