It was another tough day for UCD Football on Monday as they were unable to keep Longford Town at bay in their SSE Airtricity League of Ireland First Division clash. This latest loss has moved the Students down to fifth position on the table, with just five matches left of the season.
The Students started off as well as they had in their match on Friday, scoring the first and only goal of the first half. This goal took a lot longer than previous ones for the visitors, as Evan Weir found the back of De Town’s net in the second minute of referee’s time in the first half.
The first half was almost a total contrast to the second, as the hosts came out with a point to prove. Shane Elworthy got the equaliser for De Town just nine minutes into the second half. Sam Verdon took the hosts into the lead for the first time in the match with a goal in the 75th minute, before Robert Manley sealed the victory for Longford in the final ten minutes of the match.
The win for Longford has brought them up to third on the log, leapfrogging UCD and Cabinteely, who were third and fourth respectively. UCD will be expected to earn back some points on Saturday when they take on Shamrock Rovers II in Tallaght.
Rovers have lost their last four matches, and are just two points above Wexford Youths, second bottom on the table.
