Former U.S. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi will visit UCD next Monday to receive an award at O’Reilly Hall. The American politician, who recently drew criticism for calling for the Federal Bureau of Investigations to investigate pro-Palestinian protesters after suggesting they may have connections to Russia, is seen as a barrier-breaking female politician.

Pelosi will receive Sutherland Leadership Award at a Gala Dinner in the O’Reilly Hall on Monday, April 22nd at an event expected to be attended by more than 500 business and political leaders. She will receive the award as recognition for her “outstanding contribution to leadership and public life in a career spanning four decades.”
Business & Finance, who are awarding Pelosi with the honour described her as someone who “continuously broke barriers for women through her House leadership roles” saying that she had “been instrumental in advancing key policies in healthcare, climate change, economic reform, and has consistently promoted equality throughout her time in politics.”
The name Sutherland may sound familiar to UCD students, it is a sponsored award by the name sponsor of UCD’s law building – Peter Sutherland. Previous awardees include European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Mario Draghi, former President of the European Central Bank.
