UCD Dance Soc perform a flash mob in the Newman Building.
UCD’s inaugural Dance Society, drugstore established in September, have been crowned All Ireland Dance Champions at the All Ireland Intervarsity Dance Competition which was held this Monday and Tuesday, the 28th and 29th of February.
Elise Brennan, auditor of Dance Soc; “We were there all day yesterday inGalway… It was our first year ever to compete and we were representing UCD nationally… We had a lot of supporters… Overall, we did really really well.”
The competition tests twelve universities nationwide, including TCD, DCU, UCC, NUIG and DIT, and in its first session, UCD’s Dance Society came away bearing three trophies: first place in Hip Hop, second place in Jazz and second place in Alternative (Ballet). As a result of this achievement, UCD will host next year’s All Ireland Intervarsity Dance Competition, which will attract hundreds of dancers and students nationwide.
Jessie, Head Choreographer of UCD’s Hip Hop Crew and the person who ran the rehearsals overall had this to say: “We came first place out of twelve universities for the best Hip Hop Category in the whole of Ireland, which is amazing. We worked so hard for the last six weeks.” When asked if she expected for them to do so well, Jessie said not at all; “we were just hoping for people to recognise us as a society… We wanted them to realise that UCD are here and here to stay, but we made this impact which was great.”
